The Secret of Olympic DiveCam

Diving is one of the most fascinating sports at the Olympic games. I like watching Olympic Diving, but I wondered how the operator managed to keep the camera so perfectly synced with the diver as they plunged into the pool. Well, today I found the secret is the DiveCam uses. The DiveCam is basically a small camera contained in a pipe that follows the diver from the top of the platform all the way into the water. “One side of the pipe is transparent, through which an enclosed HD camera peers, suspended inside the pipe by a rope attached to pulleys. As the divers fall, the camera operator simply drops the camera by letting go of the rope. Because objects fall at the same speed regardless of mass, the camera falls at the same speed as the divers, following them into the water.” [via 1 2]
