How to Build a Rustic Cedar Log Fountain for the Garden
To begin the project, three cedar logs are cut into different lengths—approximately one foot, two feet, and three feet. These are then grouped together to create a tiered look. To secure them, iron straps—such as those salvaged from an old barrel—can be used to bind the logs tightly into a single structure. An additional iron band around the tops of the logs helps seal them further, especially once the wood begins to soak and swell from water use.
Each log is then hollowed out at the top to form shallow bowls that hold water. A large Forstner bit paired with a 1/2″ drill works well for this task, and any remaining material can be removed with a chisel. Once the bowls are shaped, angled holes are drilled between them, and short lengths of 3/4″ copper pipe are inserted. These pipes guide water from the tallest log down to the shortest, creating a cascading flow effect.
To hide the fountain’s tubing, an additional hole is drilled through the tallest log at a downward angle toward the center of the group. This allows for the plastic tubing from the water pump to be threaded through the interior of the structure, keeping everything hidden from view.
At the base, a small pond liner is installed into a dug-out area to act as a reservoir. A simple submersible pump is placed inside, with tubing connected to reach up through the logs. Decorative pond stones are placed inside each bowl to add weight and visual interest, while flat stones or flagstones can be arranged around the pond’s edge to complete the look.
The finished fountain blends seamlessly into a natural garden setting, offering the soothing sound of flowing water and the charm of real wood. It’s an elegant, low-cost alternative to commercial options—and one that adds lasting character to the landscape.
